Hoërskool Ben Viljoen faced Hoërskool Ellisras this past weekend during the third fixture of the NWU Schools Sports Series, where all matches were played on Ellisras’ home fields. It was a day of tough competition, but Ben Viljoen’s teams showed their mettle with several excellent performances.
Ben Viljoen’s hockey teams were undefeated and consistently led the way. The u/14 team achieved a 1–0 victory, while the u/15 team boasted a convincing 5–0 victory. The u/16 team secured their win by 7–2.
The senior teams continued the momentum, with both the second and first teams achieving comfortable 3–0 victories. This dominant performance confirms Ben Viljoen’s depth and quality in hockey.
On the netball courts, the forces were more balanced. The u/14A team achieved a thrilling 9–9 draw, while the u/15A team secured a strong 15–6 victory. In contrast, several teams were bogged down by strong Ellisras opposition, with the u/14B (10–22), u/15 B (5–20), second team (5–19), and first team (23–26), among others, having to bow to defeat. The u/16A (17–21) and u.16B (10–11) also lost narrowly.
Despite the results, the BV girls showed great fighting spirit and perseverance.
The rugby matches were very exciting, with Ben Viljoen starting strongly in the junior divisions. The u/14A (14–10), u/14B (17–12), u/15A (18–12) and u/16A (21–19) teams all achieved valuable victories.
However, Ellisras hit back in the senior and second teams, where BV’s u/16B (12–33), third team (0–24) and second team (0–39) suffered.
The first team match was a real showdown and ended in a thrilling 19–19 draw – proof of the two schools’ equivalent levels.
Although Ben Viljoen could not prevail in every division, the school’s teams showed character, discipline and sportsmanship throughout. The hockey teams’ undefeated run and the rugby team’s strong junior performances were particular highlights.
The NWU Schools Sports Series remains an important platform for young sportspeople to hone their skills and gain valuable match experience as pre-season preparation for the upcoming league matches. Hoërskool Ben Viljoen can look back with pride on a competitive and educational weekend at Ellisras.
