n 2003, Albert Swaters, then principal of Hoërskool Ben Viljoen (2003–2020), had a vision that extended far beyond the classroom. With a genuine concern for the well-being of each learner, he established the Centre for Counselling and Remediation – an initiative that is still a cornerstone of support within the school community today.
What started as a dream has developed over the years into a professional service centre where a holistic approach is followed. The premise is simple but powerful: a healthy body houses a healthy mind. Therefore, the centre strives not only to address academic challenges but also to support the emotional well-being of each learner.
Academic Support with an Eye on Success
The centre offers comprehensive academic services to learners who need extra support. This includes assistance for learners repeating an academic year, as well as aptitude and IQ tests to gain better insight into learning needs. Provision is also made for concessions, such as an amanuensis for learners who require examination assistance.
Furthermore, study assistance is provided through guidance in effective study habits and the organisation of structured study schedules. The Uduxo classes serve as a valuable resource for learners who struggle with study challenges, helping them to develop self-confidence and academic skills.
Emotional Support That Shows Care
In addition to academic assistance, the centre plays a critical role in the emotional support of learners. Services such as trauma counselling, emotional guidance and spiritual support are offered with compassion and professionalism. Learners also have access to social assistance, as well as guidance and care during challenging times.
