Governing Bodies have been described as the nervous systems of schools, which aptly sums up how important the role they play in contributing to the provision of quality education to our children.
Where a relevant, expert governing body is established at a school, this is visible eg. the terrain and buildings look good, the school performs in many areas, and there is a low turnover in teaching staff etc.
The purpose of the Governing Body is to represent the interests of the school community. It must take care of the vision, ethos and strategic direction, that the school chooses and ensure that all those involved buy into it. The governing body's primary task is governance. This involves the control of all the external factors as well as the determination of policy by the governing body. The overall control of the school is fundamental and the establishment of various policies that support the school's organization; namely the admission policy, the code of conduct for learners, discipline, etc., are extremely important. Another vital function of the governing body has to do with finances. Finance deals with school fees, budgets, fundraising projects and the proper administration of school fees. This is an extremely important role that the governing body must play. Parents' involvement ensures that the school functions optimally and that their children receive the best value for their money. A further branch of the governing body's functions includes the establishment of committees, such for example finance, buildings and terrain, discipline, hostels, marketing etc.
