“Words carry history, identity and culture - every word tells a story of who we are.”
We recently became part of the survival of the Afrikaans language by sponsoring the word “Daller” as part of the Woordeboek van die Afrikaans Taal (WAT) ‘Borg ’n Woord’ project.
This sponsorship was made possible by Ms Jean Marie Heyns, our media liaison, who sponsored the word “Daller” and dedicated it as a gift to Hoërskool Ben Viljoen. This meaningful gesture is a testament to her love for the school, its people and the unique culture that lives deep in the heart of every Daller.
The ‘Borg ’n Woord’ initiative offers individuals, schools and organisations the opportunity to make a unique contribution to the preservation and development of Afrikaans. By sponsoring a word, supporters help to enable the continued compilation and expansion of the WAT – a project that has played an important role in documenting the Afrikaans language for decades.
The word “Daller” carries its own unique character and reminds us of how colourful and vibrant Afrikaans really is.
Being a Daller is more than just a name - it is a way of life. Daller Pride lives deep in the hearts of our learners, alumni, staff, parents and community. It is the pride with which we wear the green and yellow, support each other and grow together. Daller Culture is built on the values of togetherness, perseverance, respect, and loyalty – values passed down from generation to generation.
The importance of being a Daller lies in the unity it creates. Each community member contributes in their own way to the legacy of Hoërskool Ben Viljoen. It is the special sense of belonging, the pride in our history and the passion for our future that make Daller Spirit so unique.
We believe that language builds a bridge between generations and communities, and therefore, it is a privilege for us to be part of this project.
