There is a quote from Ara Parseghian that reads "A good coach will make her players see what they can be, rather than what they are."
These words perfectly describe Ms Alicia Giles, who has been part of Hoërskool Ben Viljoen since 10 January 2022. Ms Giles has not only developed sportsmanship in her girls' cricket and hockey teams, but also instilled confidence, perseverance and team spirit in each player.
Under her leadership, her hockey teams have achieved exceptional achievements every year, and she has made her players believe in their full potential - exactly what a coach should do.
Her passion and knowledge have extended beyond the school level. As a provincial Limpopo coach, she has shaped the talent and potential of young sportswomen on larger platforms. Now she is starting a new chapter at Stanford Lake College, where she will undoubtedly bring the same inspiration, dedication and passion for sport and coaching.
Ms Giles saw sports at Ben Viljoen not just as games, but as a life lesson - about perseverance, pride and the importance of playing for each other. Her legacy lies not only in victories but in the young women she shaped and inspired to be better, not only on the field, but also in life.
With great gratitude and appreciation, we say: Thank you very much, Ms Giles, for your time, your hard work and the indelible impact you have had on the Ben Viljoen sports community.
We wish you nothing but the best at Stanford Lake College - may this new adventure bring you just as much growth, joy and victories.
