With our eye on the upgraded swimming pool, we place our focus on the history of the swimming pool, and how it came about that this Bushveld school could already boast with a swimming pool from 1956.
In the archive it is mentioned that in 1950 the decision was already taken to build a swimming pool due to the environment and it's temperature in which we live, which caused the water to be contaminated with the bilharzia germ. £750 was collected in a short time for the construction of a swimming pool, the plans were already drawn up, the cost estimates were made and the authorization from the authorities was obtained. During this year, however, South Africa experienced a serious cement shortage which caused the construction of the swimming pool to be delayed.
On 13 June 1951, the Irrigation Department was instructed to start building the swimming pool as the previous year's cement shortage had been resolved. The construction of the swimming pool lasted 5 years and on 13 November 1956, with staff and learners present, the first water flowed into the school's swimming pool. The pool was fenced on 10 December.
On 19 March 1957, the purification device of the swimming pool was switched on for the 1st time and the official inauguration of the swimming pool took place on 16 November during a swimming gala. The pool's appearance was further improved in 1967 by planting 100 Bougainvilleas against the fence around the pool in the 12 different available colours. The changing rooms were also renovated during 1972.
During 1992 a new electric pump was installed at the pool and the road next to the hall was also paved, as part of the upgrades during this year the pool floor was also painted. From 1998, major changes took place at the swimming pool and a large gala took place during 1999 to inaugurate the upgraded swimming pool. The palisade fence was erected during 2003 to further secure the pool.
On 22 September 2023, at 08:36, the first water began to flow into our upgraded swimming pool, and with great excitement, we are looking forward to the Bosveld Inter-high swimming gala which will take place on 27 September.
